I also used to be in an old friend's link area on his blog. Now... No more link and only two followers. One follower being my girlfriend. So really no one is going to read this. Ha. That is what I get for not posting for... Well is it over a year now? I guess I can add this blog to my LiveJournal pages I have not used in so long I forgot the passwords to. Well this is not a promise but maybe I will post something once in a while. Maybe I will post words at 2:18 am on a Wednesday when I can't sleep. Like, well... now.

I haven't been doing much gaming of late. No job and being in a play has kind of killed the hobby for me right now. I have a few campaigns? games? stories? distractions in the works. One is a Greyhawk game using the Pathfinder system. The second one is a DC Adventures game and the third is a Star Wars game with my girlfriend's boy. If I get the energy, maybe I will post about them. Maybe I will post about other things I enjoy like TV, comics, books and the sound of a fan as I sleep (it is so soothing). We shall see. If you read this, post a comment. I will get a kick out of seeing others as bored as I am.Black Armoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11081957790258051680noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3153065491132940929.post-72356004098949541172009-09-17T09:27:00.000-07:002009-09-17T09:31:51.667-07:00Star Wars: AotNR Session 1Yeahhhhh! Second post on the Star Wars SAGA game! Anyway…

I have 4 players. 4 is my ideal number of players for a game by the way. So what do we have in the group?

Morrigan Trechki: A human 1st level Noble / 1st level Jedi
P’Qweedan Qoocina: A Rodian 1st level Scout
Tao Vaash: A Togruta 1st level Scoundrel
K-P0N: A 3rd degree droid 1st level Noble

So after the scroll played across the screen, the space view faded to black. The view is then filled with a red light revealing the 4 main characters. The audience finds them in a New Republic Troop Transport with the only sound the whine of the repulsor engines. (Maybe the players can describe their characters’ look in detail in the comments section?)

Then the pilot signals the ready and the side doors of the transport slide open to an X-Wing-Tie fighter battle in the skies, a vast city with the look of a stone-made Coruscant and a storm raging around them. Jumping from the transport to a city walkway, the heroes are immediately fired on by a group of Imperial Stormtroopers. After a short battle,* the players captured a technician and brought down the shield controls. They then moved through the building and captured Sagrin Leer after being confronted by a couple Stormtroopers and Super Battle Droids. They also spy Leer speaking with a holographic Grudda the Hutt as he washes his hands of the spice addicted Leer.

After some discussion, Morrigan takes the heroes to back her up as she speaks with her brother Gage, leader of the Novas, an Almarsh based Swoop Gang linked to Grudda’s organization. Meeting at The Pit, a bar in the mid-levels, Morrigan sits with her brother, a rancor of a human with a long scar down the side of his face, as the others spread out. The conversation with Gage was short; he did not want to stick his neck out for the New Republic agents without some more assurances from Morrigan about his people’s safety. He also continued to show his displeasure of Morrigan leaving him and their younger brother to join the rebellion.

During the talk, P’Qweedan Qoocina strikes up a conversation with a pair of female Zabrak twins**. After bribing and flirting with the twins, Qoocina thinks he can get more information about Grudda’s operation at the black market of the world. Now he plans to acquire some illicit goods to aid in the endeavor.

As they were leaving The Pit, Morrigan spoke with a bounty hunter from her past that mentioned he would be seeing her soon… And that was the end of the session.

Dramatic Persona

Gage Trechki: Leader of the Swoop Gang Novas. Morrigan’s older brother.
Grudda the Hutt: Head of the criminal element on Almarsh and beyond.
Jodo Kast: Dangerous bounty hunter from Morrigan’s past.
Sagrin Leer: Imperial official in the thrall of Grudda.

* The battle had some frustrating moments. The dice were not with the players. After a lot of misses on both sides, the Stormtroopers were defeated. I think 2 of the players took a Second Wind during this initial fight. The Jedi player also found her grove I think when she was able to drop her blaster and pull her lightsaber. Having stated she thought she would be better with a blaster in her hand, she was having more fun slashing and being able to try deflection. I was pleasantly surprised she could deflect so well at a low level (granted she only needed to deflect one attack a round usually because I was coordinating attacks a lot). It made the game feel like Star Wars quickly to me.

** This happened because the player saw 2 identical Zabrak minis on the battlemat and thought up the NPCs on the fly. I thought the inspiration was great and will be putting the Zabrak twins in the game in some way in the future. So minis can actually help the creative process out of a combat encounter. Cool.Black Armoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11081957790258051680noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3153065491132940929.post-39506994406184646062009-09-08T20:43:00.000-07:002009-09-08T20:58:31.707-07:00NEW STAR WARS GAMESo I just started a SAGA Edition Star Wars game. I am pretty excited about about the campaign. I have been running Star Wars since the old West End Games version. The storyline I have set up ended around the time of Return of the Jedi. I have started this the new game in the New Republic era. I will try to put up the session summaries and notes on how I think the game in going. Hopefully I will be able to (see "the Challenge" post). Anyway, to start with, here is the opening scrawl...

STAR WARS
Agents of the New Republic
Episode 1: The Hutt’s Throne

The Emperor is dead. His two projects of tyranny, the second Death Star and Sovereign Station with their darksider’s Darth Vader and Imperial Guardian Ta’lon defeated with him. Now the Empire, once the great evil in the galaxy, is fractured and criminals and warlords from across space fight for the ideals of the Empire or their own greed.
With the galaxy in the throes of a new civil war, a fledgling government and its agents stand strong against tyranny, greed, malevolence and the still real power of the Dark Side. The New Republic fights to push back the darkness and lead the sentients of the stars into a lasting peace.
A year after the Emperor’s death, a small group of New Republic agents joins the fight on the world of Almarsh in the Trityri Region. Homeworld of Morrigan Trechki, Almarsh was once a jewel of the old republic until the Clone Wars and the Empire. Now others have claimed the world and are loath to give it up. The agents must fight their way through opposition to destroy the Imperial shield controls and capture leader Sagrin Leer. But is his throne one of power or servitude.

More to come. The PDF is a superhero setting and system for Pinnacle Entertainment’s Savage Worlds line. I have decided to review the product in two categories, the first is “PDF and Layout” and the second is “System and Setting”. It is important to note Dawn of Legends is not a complete game and requires the Savage Worlds Explorers Edition to play. So without further adieu.

PDF and Layout

First of all, at over 280 pages, the PDF has a lot of work put into it with borders on every page and style of art. The art ranges from comical, like Archie Comics, to heroic, like superhero comics of today and yesterday. Many of the pictures were inspirational for the setting contained in the book. The layout was standard game design with the first half of the PDF comprising player information for the setting, then character creation and setting specific rules. The last half was the Gamemaster’s Section with more rules, detail on setting and NPC statistics.

That being said, the PDF had so much going on in layout, it lagged badly on both the computers I tried it on. I found myself using the “Print Friendly” version more often than not because it would load pages faster. Both PDFs had problems loading pages with charts on them however. I also did not like that the PDF had no index. The Table of Contents did a fair job of making up for the lack. I especially liked having each power with page number being noted in the table. With most of the game rules in the Savage Worlds Explorers Edition, finding what powers do will be the number one reason to open the PDF at the game table.

System and Setting

Now on to the real reason you are reading this review, information on the system and setting. I will go through the book section by section (mostly).

After a forward by one of the creators, the PDF discusses the basics of Neos (DoL’s term for characters with powers). Sections on Neo origins, Neos in the media and Neos and laws are some of the parts of this section. I found the information extensive and really gave a player an idea of what they are getting into with the Dawn of Legends setting. I particularly liked the part about laws and Neos, useful for the game’s setting and templates for homebrew settings.
The PDF then goes into an extensive character generation aid titled “Creating the Backstory”. It starts with 20 questions and then goes into a way to randomly generate answers to those questions with the aid of a deck of cards instead of dice. The creators state Dawn of Legends is about the person and not the powers. The questions and generator really pushes this idea forward. Using them in total or taking character inspiration from them, the player should really know how his character thinks. And it was fun to see what was created by going totally random.

Next is the statistics creation of the character. This section refers a lot to the Savage Worlds Explorers Edition as many of the creation rules can be found there. There are many new Edges and Hindrances for a hero setting; my favorite one was Battle Cape. The game also introduces new Benny rules, a Wealth Rating and die system used to acquire items in game and a Popularity system. I really like the Popularity system as what people think about their heroes is, well, popular in comics (example Watchmen) and is rarely mentioned in hero games I have run except as one or two merits. The system also gives bonuses or penalties based off of the rating.

The game offers creation of Super Teams. Players gain points at creation and can use experience to buy advantages for their team like buildings, equipment and so much more. The Super Team creation is like another shared character being created by the players. A really fun mechanic that aids the comic feel.

The Power system is definitely influenced by Mutants and Masterminds (as Daring Entertainment has products in this line) and players of M & M will find familiar ground here. There is a system to link powers called Networking, and also to create gadgets and aliens. With the number of powers, edges and hindrances, extras and power boosters, the number of abilities one can create is staggering. There are even details for creating new powers. It seems Daring Entertainment has really put work into the system and still keeps to the Savage Worlds motto of Fast, Fun, and Furious. The powers system is more complicated than other SW’s rule systems for other settings, but looking over how they work together, the creators found great ways to meld them.

The only thing I did not like about the powers section was a lack of discussion on how to use power creation for different genres other than the one Dawn of Legends supports. There is also a lack of discussion of what power level starting characters should really be. I just don’t see many Novice heroes for Dawn of Legends.

As I had said, the last (more than) half of the book is Gamemaster material, mostly the Dawn of Legends setting. I must say this is a book in and of itself. Where other publishers make their first supplement a setting book, Daring Entertainment seems to add it to their core book. The section goes into much more depth on information seen in the player’s section. There is also information on other countries’ view of Neos, many setting NPCs and the setting city of Autumn Arbor. The level of detail on the setting is great. There are interesting setting takes on popular comic heroes like Fantastic Four and Superman among others. I must say I loved this section. The material is great for someone looking for the feel of Dawn of Legends to run the setting and also for inspiration on homebrew settings. This is also mostly a system generic area of the PDF as the stats for characters are at the end of the PDF. I like this placement as it makes it far easier to find NPC statistics in play.

For veterans of Savage Worlds, the setting does not come with a Plot-Point Campaign. It does however have an adventure generator. The generator is great for “one issue” adventures but can also give a GM a linked series of adventures with just a little work on their part.

Conclusion

At first glance, the PDF is both beautiful and aggravating, the art style really fits the feel but the PDF has trouble running it. The content however more than makes up for the PDFs deficiencies though. The Backstory generator, Popularity system and Super Team creation rules really aid the players and GM with getting into the Dawn of Legends feel and comic books in general. The options DoLs gives to creating powers lives up to fans of M & Ms and fans of the rare hero. The power system goes way beyond the creation of Superman and Batman and gives the player a good tool kit for creating any powered hero they can imagine. Plus with the way Savage Worlds works, you can easily use or not use any of these rules you want.

The setting material also shines with the great detail the creators put into it. Even without a Plot-Point Campaign, the setting has so many story hooks; thinking up heroic adventures has a lot of help.

Daring Entertainment has a great product in Dawn of Legends. They really seem to understand the hero genre and have put it into the product. I strongly recommend DoLs for fans of not only Savage Worlds but superhero games in general.Black Armoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11081957790258051680noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3153065491132940929.post-45442280659778050422009-02-26T06:09:00.000-08:002009-02-26T06:21:45.075-08:00The Dawn Has Come!I am pretty excited. I was a little sick. Anyway, the other day I got out my little black book. Yes, I mean Traveller. Having not picked it up in YEARS, my girlfriend and I decided to make some characters. She liked it so much, she wanted to make two (that is a real feat). Now I do not know if we did it right but here is the fruit of our labors.

1) Ex-Other 467856 Age 30 3 terms Cr 50,000
Blade Combat (Blade, Cutlass) - 1, Jack of All Trades - 1, Streetwise - 1 Gun

2) Ex-Army 31010399 Age 34 4 terms Cr 20,000
Vechicle (Winged Craft) - 1, Gambling - 1, Blade Combat (Cutlass) - 1 High Psg

3) Scout 679835 Age 22 1 term
Vac Suit - 1, Vechicle (Winged Craft) - 1

Sadly, number 3 died in service. It must be said that her contribution to the galaxy was great and noble. She will be missed. Don't forget her. She will live on in us.Black Armoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11081957790258051680noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3153065491132940929.post-23233225451501545062009-02-23T07:21:00.001-08:002009-02-23T07:29:43.095-08:00Are You Tough Enough?Cupcake number 3!

Harsh Tales: Welcome to the Mean Streets

...is your first taste of the forbidden world of Hardboiled. I decided to put up some pictures from my years of combing the interweb looking for game inspiration. I do not remember where I got most of them so if you see something familiar, let me know. I will put up a link or remove it.

Black Armoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11081957790258051680noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3153065491132940929.post-39636886079783841512009-02-19T18:06:00.001-08:002009-02-19T18:56:02.554-08:00Life in MiniatureI never liked to use miniatures in my roleplaying games. I always thought they were the tools of tactical gamers who play Battletech and Warhammer for example. I was a roleplayer, not a figure pusher. If I used miniatures, my players would think more about where their figure was on the battlemat and not what was going on in their characters' heads.

After years and years of roleplaying combat however, I noticed something horrible. When fighting broke out in my stories, I was starting to think less about the scene and what was happening. The abstraction of combat started to get very dull for me. There is only so many times a character swings a sword or fires a gun before I start to think of them all as the same moment. It was no longer a tense situation for the characters or myself. Combat was a scene filler until I got back to the drama and not drama itself. I think my combats reflected this also. I saw myself saying dreaded phrases like, "ok, you hit, roll your damage" without considering what was happening in the story.

At some point I started running Deadlands: Reloaded, a game by Pinnacle Entertainment. The company produced paper miniatures for the game and I got the pdf.* I used them a little at the start of the campaign and more as the story progressed. I did not realize what was happening to me because of the miniatures however. My concept of the story and scene was getting a boost. This effect hit me at last game. The characters were fighting a large monster (Mojave Rattler for those in the know) and I could see what was happening through the little pieces of paper. At one point, the monster had two characters at the jaws of death (almost literally) and the characters fought for their lives with six-shooters and knives. Man was it cool. The interesting thing was that I could see it again. Looking at the minis (characters laying on top of the monster mini) I just kept thinking if this was in a movie it would look awesome. The minis kick started my brain into the scene and allowed it take the image to the next level. I could now see the character running for his life with the sweat on his face. His companion firing his rifle and the Huckster blasting the monster with magic became vivid in my mind. It was a great experience.

Using miniatures in a roleplaying game is not for everyone. It wasn't for me. I say try it however if you haven't. Paper minis are pretty cheap to try this out if you are short on cash. If you think your combats are becoming stale, I say try using minis and see if it doesn't kick start your imagination. And let me know what you think.

*I think it helps I didn't have to buy hundreds of dollars worth of plastic minis.Black Armoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11081957790258051680noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3153065491132940929.post-14119630947634703082009-02-18T20:18:00.001-08:002009-02-18T20:51:18.296-08:00Top 5 - Road KillerWow, I should have challenged myself to once a week. These blogs may get really dumb. Especially since I haven't had time to game a lot recently.

But in the tradition of one of my favorite movies, High Fidelity, here comes the Top 5 list. I will try to make the list a regular feature. Maybe on Wednesday I will try and come out with a new one. So here goes...

TOP 5 GAMES TO RUN AFTER HITTING AN ANIMAL IN THE STREET.

5) Any Superhero Game (Mutants and Masterminds would be my pick): Just create a team of animal and plant inspired heroes. It works great for Aquaman with all the respect and power he gets. Someone must have hit a dolphin in their Pinto.

4) Werewolf: the Apocalypse: War of Rage baby! Make them all road kill and let Gaia sort them out.

3) Car Wars: WOOOOOO! Deer 5 points. Man 10! Kick me another brew dude! BUUURRRRRP!

2) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: You are an irradiated, pissed off chipmunk who's dad just got aced by a jerk off in a Pinto... and go.

1) Ironclaw: The world of vehicular animal slaughter sucks. Lets live in a more comforting world of foxes and bunnies stabbing each other for power and glory.Black Armoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11081957790258051680noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3153065491132940929.post-77717963824353548802009-02-17T19:03:00.000-08:002009-02-17T20:00:37.558-08:00To All the Games I've Loved Before...I have recently had a space problem. I am moving my stuff from my parents/storage house to one I share with two roommates and a child. Anyway, I needed to trim the fat so to speak. I have a lot of books and the most prevalent are game books. Now fast forward to a new Half-Price Books Store opening in my hometown. These two events have created a recipe for making some cash for my Gen Con trip since money will be pretty tight this year.

This is where the narration takes a sad turn however. Now I have to go though my collect and decide what books stay and what books go. How do I choose? How would you choose? At first I decided if I was not planning on playing a game in the next year, the books had to go. With so many settings however, I just couldn't do it. Then I thought I will keep the best game for each genre (SciFi, Fantasy etc.). But who can pick? Can you honestly tell me the better game between Transhuman Space and AEON or Blood of Heroes and Mutants and Masterminds? You can? Pass me that cup filled with water from the fountain of knowledge.

You see, I have a healthy imagination for my age. Most gamers do I think. When I look at and read game books, I see the scenes, the adventures, they can create. For example, when I look at Legend of the Five Rings, the words fall from my mind and are replaced with impressions of trying to keep my Lion mantle in place as I and my honor guard race over a grassy hill to destroy the vile Crane beyond. Feeling the wind. Hearing the horses hooves. The texture of my gloved hand holding my father's weapon. What about Chill and the knowledge that just beyond the worn, stained apartment door in front of you are creatures man was not meant to know? To feel the glorious anger being released as my body cracks and elongates into that same creature in Werewolf: the Forsaken. How do you say goodbye to those feelings?

Well in the end I did say farewell to some. All in all I think I sold about 75 books. And to all those games I've loved before, thank you. Thank you for helping me feel larger than life and no smaller than my imagination could dream. I hope someone sees you on the store shelf and looks past the illusion. Sees your words for what they are, dreams of adventure. For me, I still have many favorites and worlds to explore.Black Armoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11081957790258051680noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3153065491132940929.post-55348626507311186112009-02-16T18:14:00.000-08:002009-02-16T18:32:00.065-08:00The challenge! So I have this blog I never use. There are many reasons I guess, a new job, over-eating, TVs that record shows, extreme laziness. Well after thinking about it, I have decided to challenge myself. I will post something on this blog everyday until my birthday in May! Only until May because I am directing a summer Shakespeare play and when that hits full steam, I will probably have a hard time gaming let alone blogging.

Now even though I have challenged myself, I do not expect this blog to be the creme on top of Rooty-Tooty Fresh and Fruity pancakes. I may go a week with only typing "I like cake and dice." I do not know. I will try however to post topics that are interesting to me. If they are interesting to me, they may be interesting to other gamers. That reminds me. I will try to stay the course of this blog being game related. That is why I started it and that is where I want it to stay. Gaming is my number one hobby and this is my best outlet to express it outside of actually playing. So with that said, I will see you tomorrow!Black Armoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11081957790258051680noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3153065491132940929.post-2856815633246089062008-12-08T18:42:00.000-08:002008-12-08T18:49:41.549-08:00Why I am doing it.So I have decided to go back to the old world. The old World of Darkness that is. The first game I ran (for more than a session or two) was Vampire. In my high school and early college days, I ran a Vampire game almost every Friday for three years. I dabbled with the other games on and off later to various successes.

My second favorite oWOD game during this time was Changeling: the Dreaming. Not because it fit in with the other settings (IMHO) but because it was a beautiful game. Whenever I cracked open the book, I seemed to be filled with a sense of wonder. I really felt the magic of the game (no pun intended). I have tried over the years to start a number of Changeling games with little success, sometimes because of the players and other times because of me.

Well fast forward to the present. After graduating from college (many years later), I have started gaming on a semi-regular basis. I started a Deadlands: Reloaded campaign. After a solid summer of play, one of the players had to take a job over the road. Discussing the problem to the group yielded we should play another game while we were short a player, Changeling was that game.

I cracked open the book again and was filled with nostalgia and dread. Yes the players made characters and yes we played through a story arc I titled “The Thief of Yesterday”. But then I was stumped. I couldn’t think of anything. My inspiration was gone. I always had a knack of making the meta-plot, the grand story. Now… I had nothing and it made me sad. I had succumbed to the enemy of make-believe. I had grown up and left my wonder behind. “But you are running a game of Deadlands?” you say. True, but Changeling could always help me see past the reality of the world we live in and touch the myth of that same place. This was no longer happening, it was just a book. After a couple of weeks trying to decide what to do, I turned it over to the players. I asked them to tell me what they wanted to see from the game.

The comments they scribbled on paper made me realize they wanted the same thing I had lost, the ability of Changeling to aid us in touching the mystic. Not grand meta-plot but personal magic. Not great philosophical debates over good and evil but the greater power of childlike wonder. That is what I am going to try and give them with Changeling and its stories. The problems I was having even helped create the next story, “Space Ranger Lost.”

Now I know this may have seemed more dramatic than need be. And I am not saying every game I run from now on will be some great work of myth. I am saying (to my players), this is how I feel and what I want to add to our stories. And to the greater gaming community, there are always times when your dreams leave us, when we cannot touch the magic within us. But do not despair or think you are too old. The mystic reaches out everyday, just stand back and let it, both personally and with friends. Gaming is a social hobby. That’s nothing new, I know. ;)Black Armoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11081957790258051680noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3153065491132940929.post-20301212966936270192008-12-06T11:26:00.001-08:002008-12-06T13:38:53.227-08:00Don't Rest Your Head [Session 1]So here is the first play summary for my Don't Rest Your Head game. After I will have some thoughts on how it went.

The story started with a frantic Jonas destroying his college dorm room looking for his design project. He thinks it might have been thrown out by his roommate and runs to the door almost bumping into him. After a strained conversation and an invite to a local bar, Jonas runs to the dumpster. Rooting around in the filth of the dumpster and getting damp from the cold mist of winter, Jonas finds a lifelike wooden puppet about the size on a 5 to 8 year old child smiling up at him, but no project. Weird yes, relevant no. Jonas ran to the library. Not finding his project, he decided to use the bathroom. While washing, he met a wooden man in a 50s style brown suit with cords attached to him running through the ceiling. Um yeah, he ran.

Next we met Kesi who was placing her murdered child in a dumpster. Looking around she also finds a wooden child only slightly different from the one Jonas did. Taking the wooden child and leaving her's, Kesi searched out an all night clinic. She becomes very attached to the lifeless child.

Then Billie picked herself up from the ground shaken and hurt. She decided to drive to the police station to make a report. Running up to the front desk she screams for help with the only person there ignoring her. Finally the chair slowly turns and she glimpses a lifeless wooden policeman. Staring, Billie eventually ran to her car.

While Jonas was driving to the bar (he needed a drink), he spies three figures through the winter mist. One of them pointed to him and the other two started to move toward him. Jonas quickly made a u-turn to avoid them while Billie was driving the other way. Paying attention to Jonas, Billie hits the first figure. Jonas stops as Kesi enters the scene to see what happened. The women find a wooden man in a 50s brown suit and damaged cords coming out of his body sitting up. Kesi and Billie started to run to a nearby gas station with Kesi finding it empty and Billie falling before the wooden man. Jonas couldn't leave her so with his "god of architecture" realized if he hurried, the other two figures would be trapped under a faulty streetlamp. The lamp falls on the figures but also his car. He and Billie ran to the gas station. After finding an antique telephone and no help, Jonas takes a bat from behind the counter and goes to beat the ever-loving piss out of the wooden men. The men went down stating the protagonists had seen to much. He decides to bring a head of one of the men along to a pancake house. They just wanted to be around other people.

At the pancake house, the protagonists interrogate the head who will only revel the creator is through the looking glass. They also learn two other things. 1) It seems they are the only ones who can see the wooden parts and 2) there is a smelly sewer grate under the table. While deciding what to do next, 3 wooden figures with cords like puppets float down from the sky. Ok, the protagonists ran.

Billie drops Jonas off at his dorm and takes Kesi to her place. Jonas answers a knock at the door to reveal his roommate as a corded wooden man. He can't take it and runs to a closet. Opening the door to a crowded city street (the looking glass), he steps through. Walking down the strange city, Jonas sees antique cars, people and unpeople traveling the sidewalk. Getting off the street, he steps into a 50s style soda shop. Conversing with the soda jerk, he reveals the location of a toymaker down the street with a lot of "Hey Mack" and "What'll it be buddy?" in his speech.

Billie and Kesi discover a door placed in the middle of Billie's second floor patio. After some tentative experimentation, they go through the door and fall a couple feet onto a rooftop. They stood among the peaks of a great city with a bloated moon against a too close night sky.
***************************

That ends the first session leaving the protagonists just arriving in the Mad City. I think the players do not know what to make of the game yet but fun was had by all. We had a lot of stops and starts, mostly because I was having some trouble with the rules mechanics. The game also allows for player narration, so we were testing the waters on that. I think this added a lot to the game. A player stated there was no one in the gas station heightening the feeling of isolation in the scene and another came up with the streetlamp smashing Jonas' car after I was at a loss to figure how Pain would dominate the scene. I will add more about how I think the rules add or subtract from the game as we become more comfortable with them.

By the way, the main idea for the antagonist in the first story arc comes from an actual play podcast by The Game Master Show. Even though I am going a slightly different direction with it, I just wanted to give them some props.Black Armoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11081957790258051680noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3153065491132940929.post-81998931650621148892008-12-05T14:30:00.000-08:002008-12-05T15:46:00.383-08:00DON'T REST YOUR HEAD! Really, it will be eaten.I know I have not posted anything in a LONG time but nobody is reading this anyway. ;)

I have started a game of Don't Rest Your Head by Fred Hicks and published by Evil Hat Productions. I have had the game for awhile and have been really itching to play it. It is an "Indie" game with a very Dark City feel to it. So with a lot of "We have to try this game!!", my girlfriend and a couple friends created characters. Now the game is centered around a nightmare world where the characters are insomniacs that lose it and gain superpowers called Madness Talents (in a very small nutshell). Character creation is fairly simple with a player answering a number of questions and creating an Exhaustion (a real world ability you EXCEL at) and Madness Talent. Choosing a Madness Talent was by far the most difficult process in character creation for us. We did not know how much we should define at the start what a talent can do. We decided to go with a word or phrase and when discuss using the talent as the need arose in game. Also, the words in all capitals below are from the DRYH character sheet.

So without further ado, their creations...

MY NAME IS... Jonas Brice.
AND I AM .. an architectural student.
WHAT'S BEEN KEEPING ME AWAKE? The stresses of failing out of school. The approval of my father for my career choices.
WHAT JUST HAPPENED TO YOU? I just lost my senior design/architectural project.
WHAT'S ON THE SURFACE? A nervous, clean cut young man with a mostly sunny disposition.
WHAT LIES BENEATH? A deep hatred and fear of my father. A man hiding pent up frustrations.
WHAT'S YOUR PATH? To find my goddamn project before the end of the semester.
RESPONSES: 2 FIGHT, 1 FLIGHT.
EXHAUSTION TALENT: Memory Recall.
MADNESS TALENT: The God of Architecture.

*****************************
MY NAME IS... Billie Fordeck.
AND I AM .. a law student.
WHAT'S BEEN KEEPING ME AWAKE? In order to keep up with my studies, I became addicted to meth to stay awake.
WHAT JUST HAPPENED TO YOU? A masked man assaulted me. He tried to rape me but ran away when a car passed by. I was left with a torn shirt and bruises everywhere.
WHAT'S ON THE SURFACE? A high strung overachiever; driven and physically pulled together. I have no time for dating so sometimes I come off as a bitch.
WHAT LIES BENEATH? A scared little girl wanting to prove herself to her parents and the world, but always finding herself lacking
WHAT'S YOUR PATH? Find who assaulted me and take revenge.
RESPONSES: 1 FIGHT, 2 FLIGHT.
EXHAUSTION TALENT: Persuasive Speaking.
MADNESS TALENT: Belittle (by being condescending or insulting I can deflate others either physically or emotionally).
****************************
MY NAME IS... Kesi Mahgoor.
AND I AM .. a transient gypsy.
WHAT'S BEEN KEEPING ME AWAKE? The recent suicide of my father. I am now in "survival mode" trying to fend for myself while being homeless and alone.
WHAT JUST HAPPENED TO YOU? I was trying to console my wailing infant. The infant is suffering from a deficiency of birth (mental and physical). I just put my hand over its face to stop the crying. In shock I discard the tiny body.
WHAT'S ON THE SURFACE? A street smart girl. I am whimsical, exotic and kind.
WHAT LIES BENEATH? I am terrified of being sent back to Alexandria, Egypt. However, I am more afraid of spending the rest of my life alone and hungry. No apparent options or obvious solutions.
WHAT'S YOUR PATH? To make a real life for myself and come to grips with my father's death. To reconcile my guilt over the murder of my child.
RESPONSES: 1 FIGHT, 2 FLIGHT.
EXHAUSTION TALENT: Poetry.
MADNESS TALENT: The Darkness Within.

There they are in all their flaws (the characters, not the players). As of this post, we have played the first session so I will discuss it soon.Black Armoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11081957790258051680noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3153065491132940929.post-88806518979010419912008-03-23T19:46:00.001-07:002008-03-23T20:37:43.028-07:00Stargate vs Star Wars Gaming?Well I am in a bind. I have thought it over and for a major game this summer and beyond(read: about once a week) I would like to run either Stargate: SG-1 D20 or Star Wars D6. There are reasons I would like to run both of the games.

Stargate: Ok, I think the game is well constructed with only a few flaws. I ran a campaign using the rules which lasted for about a year and a half. I love the setting. Stargate combines two of my favorite genres: military and ancient civilizations. The setting is also based on modern day heroes so familiarity for the players is high. The premise allows for fast action, discovery and emotional storylines. If I were to run the game, here are the ideas for campaigns I have...

1) Redoing the whole thing. The stargate is recently discovered. The players are the first to go thru the gate. My own stargate universe* entirely.

2) Starting later in the show. Maybe starting the game in season 6, 7 or 8. The characters would probably be a new SG team or a new SG-1 after something happens to the old team. This game would tentatively follow the plots of the show with obvious changes because of the players.

Star Wars: Once again, I really like the system and see only a few flaws. I ran a campaign with this game for about 7 years (on and off). I really like this setting too. It is the best in high adventure and big space battles, both things I love it for. It does seem at times it loses the human element that Stargate does so well. But can you really care with the joy of facing down a fleet of Imperial ships or that Dark Jedi? If I were to run this game, here are the ideas for campaigns I have...

1) The creation of a starfighter group with the characters as the main pilots. This campaign would be set at the start of the rebellion as the players work to build the Rebel Alliance in their region.

2) The characters are a smuggling group. Inspirations for this game are the Han Solo Adventures and the Firefly tv show. Whether the deal goes bad, the Imperials are on your tail or the Alliance needs your help, AGAIN... just keep flying.

3) Continue the campaign I have run for the last decade. This would take the game into the New Republic era. A few characters would be returning and would need to be converted back from D20 to D6 Star Wars. This would create a little logistics problem for the old and new characters however as the old characters have been played in the setting for some time.

Well if you are interested in gaming with me, go ahead and tell me what you think!

*Not to be confused with "Stargate: Universe", the new spin-off series. I am serious, look it up. I can wait.Black Armoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11081957790258051680noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3153065491132940929.post-15160632165969696102008-03-19T21:54:00.000-07:002008-04-13T21:34:11.932-07:00Sweep the leg...You know. I always liked the movie Karate Kid. But come on, Daniel? You have to be kidding me. Whether it was the actor or the part, I never was able to relate.

Now Johnny on the other hand. The blonde guys are always the bullies. Am I wrong? Poor guy. All he wanted to do was get fit and hangout with his friends. Was it his fault his father figure was such a jerk? I think if we are to examine Johnny Lawrence's life, evidence of a broken home will be revealed.

With this in mind, let us view his relationship with his girlfriend. Having some personal issues, he may have lashed out at those he loved. Then what does Ali do, does she try to help Johnny through his troubles? No, she leaves him for the first tool that comes along. What damage that did to Johnny we may never know. And we should remember that Ali leaves Daniel for a college guy by the summer, how healthy could she have been for Johnny anyway.

With all this working against our hero, he still doesn't want to hurt Daniel (the tool) in the end. I mean, look into his eyes when so-called Master Kreese orders him to "sweep the leg". Even as some of his friends are in agreement with Kreese, Johnny shows strong reluctance and some fear. Just look into his eyes. Then showing great humility with everything life has thrown him, he hands the trophy to Daniel. What a role model.

So Johnny, sweep the leg. We all make mistakes, but heroes learn from them and become stronger. What am I freaking about? What game I should run!* I have been a gamer for a number of years and before college was spoiled by a playerbase who I could always count on to humor me in by GM tastes. Since being in college however, I have not had much time to devote to my number one pastime. Don't get me wrong, there have been a couple gems in the past four years. The best being a D6 Space game I played in at the FLGS. But me, running games, one on even a semester basis? Yeah, NO.
I have been keeping up with the game industry during college (read: buying and reading gamebooks). Over the past for years I have acquired an impressive array of game material for someone not playing. Let us see... I have picked up (in a Golem like way yeessss) books related to Star Trek, Star Wars, Serenity, Shadowrun, D6 Rulebooks, Traveler, Immortal and a number of GURPS books. I have also been converted into an Inde Press lover and purchased Burning Wheel, Nine Worlds, Mortal Coil, Agon, Polaris, Conspiracy of Shadows, Spirit of the Century, Don't Rest Your Head, Primetime Adventures and Dust Devils. 18 different games. 18! By the way, those are the games I remember.

What is a guy to do? I feel like I am going to EXPLODE (yes I used all caps) with game need. I have ideas for stories galor. Where do I start? What do I do? No one can run all of this. I jump from game to game faster than a news channel after a pop star. I have them, I have to use them.

Lastly, I hope the players are still there. We had a lot of fun in the past right? I believe there are more wonders to behold. When I get home, let's take a journey together.

Ok. I feel a little better.

* Well I am concerned about other aspects of graduating college. I just am not going to discuss them in "Gamer Therapy". :)Black Armoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11081957790258051680noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3153065491132940929.post-87219964378936834152008-03-17T08:28:00.000-07:002008-03-17T08:54:21.321-07:00DreamsSo I had two dreams last night. Like I said, this stuff will not be interesting to more that 99.9% of the population. Anyway...

The first dream had Willie Aames in it (if you don't know who he is google him). Your guess is as good as mine. Thankfully I don't remember much of that one.

The second was a little odd. I was sitting in my childhood church with current friends. I was actually feeling good being there I think. Then the priest started lecturing about those who are so bad they couldn't be at the church and they had to leave. I remember looking around to see who they were. Then a group of people in the row behind me got up and started to leave the church in a line. They were all wearing hot red high school letter jackets. On the back of the jackets were dirty titles (like scarlet letter style). They all left and I was then sitting in a different area of the building. The priest comments that the people who left need to take their stuff with them. So all these people come back and the rows are full of assorted items the people are gathering. One comes up beside me and asks if I can give them the item next to me. I look down and there is an unopened Foghat album next to me. I pick it up and decide I want to keep it. Then my alarm goes off.

Like I said, your guess is as good as mine. I don't think I ever really heard a Foghat song before.Black Armoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11081957790258051680noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3153065491132940929.post-26690684317070185912008-03-16T20:14:00.000-07:002008-03-16T20:19:50.779-07:00My IntroductionWell here is my blog. I created this thing because I am a roleplayer. Yes, the dreaded word. I will be using this to place notes for my games when I run them. So I guess this is mostly for my players.

Once in a while I may blog just to say or write something I am feeling. This will probably not happen very often however. More later.Black Armoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11081957790258051680noreply@blogger.com3
