Stargate vs Star Wars Gaming?

Well I am in a bind. I have thought it over and for a major game this summer and beyond(read: about once a week) I would like to run either Stargate: SG-1 D20 or Star Wars D6. There are reasons I would like to run both of the games.

Stargate: Ok, I think the game is well constructed with only a few flaws. I ran a campaign using the rules which lasted for about a year and a half. I love the setting. Stargate combines two of my favorite genres: military and ancient civilizations. The setting is also based on modern day heroes so familiarity for the players is high. The premise allows for fast action, discovery and emotional storylines. If I were to run the game, here are the ideas for campaigns I have...

1) Redoing the whole thing. The stargate is recently discovered. The players are the first to go thru the gate. My own stargate universe* entirely.

2) Starting later in the show. Maybe starting the game in season 6, 7 or 8. The characters would probably be a new SG team or a new SG-1 after something happens to the old team. This game would tentatively follow the plots of the show with obvious changes because of the players.

Star Wars: Once again, I really like the system and see only a few flaws. I ran a campaign with this game for about 7 years (on and off). I really like this setting too. It is the best in high adventure and big space battles, both things I love it for. It does seem at times it loses the human element that Stargate does so well. But can you really care with the joy of facing down a fleet of Imperial ships or that Dark Jedi? If I were to run this game, here are the ideas for campaigns I have...

1) The creation of a starfighter group with the characters as the main pilots. This campaign would be set at the start of the rebellion as the players work to build the Rebel Alliance in their region.

2) The characters are a smuggling group. Inspirations for this game are the Han Solo Adventures and the Firefly tv show. Whether the deal goes bad, the Imperials are on your tail or the Alliance needs your help, AGAIN... just keep flying.

3) Continue the campaign I have run for the last decade. This would take the game into the New Republic era. A few characters would be returning and would need to be converted back from D20 to D6 Star Wars. This would create a little logistics problem for the old and new characters however as the old characters have been played in the setting for some time.

Well if you are interested in gaming with me, go ahead and tell me what you think!

*Not to be confused with "Stargate: Universe", the new spin-off series. I am serious, look it up. I can wait.

Sweep the leg...

You know. I always liked the movie Karate Kid. But come on, Daniel? You have to be kidding me. Whether it was the actor or the part, I never was able to relate.

Now Johnny on the other hand. The blonde guys are always the bullies. Am I wrong? Poor guy. All he wanted to do was get fit and hangout with his friends. Was it his fault his father figure was such a jerk? I think if we are to examine Johnny Lawrence's life, evidence of a broken home will be revealed.

With this in mind, let us view his relationship with his girlfriend. Having some personal issues, he may have lashed out at those he loved. Then what does Ali do, does she try to help Johnny through his troubles? No, she leaves him for the first tool that comes along. What damage that did to Johnny we may never know. And we should remember that Ali leaves Daniel for a college guy by the summer, how healthy could she have been for Johnny anyway.

With all this working against our hero, he still doesn't want to hurt Daniel (the tool) in the end. I mean, look into his eyes when so-called Master Kreese orders him to "sweep the leg". Even as some of his friends are in agreement with Kreese, Johnny shows strong reluctance and some fear. Just look into his eyes. Then showing great humility with everything life has thrown him, he hands the trophy to Daniel. What a role model.

So Johnny, sweep the leg. We all make mistakes, but heroes learn from them and become stronger. Thank you.

Gamer Therapy 1

So I am going to graduate from college soon and I am freaking out! What am I freaking about? What game I should run!* I have been a gamer for a number of years and before college was spoiled by a playerbase who I could always count on to humor me in by GM tastes. Since being in college however, I have not had much time to devote to my number one pastime. Don't get me wrong, there have been a couple gems in the past four years. The best being a D6 Space game I played in at the FLGS. But me, running games, one on even a semester basis? Yeah, NO.
I have been keeping up with the game industry during college (read: buying and reading gamebooks). Over the past for years I have acquired an impressive array of game material for someone not playing. Let us see... I have picked up (in a Golem like way yeessss) books related to Star Trek, Star Wars, Serenity, Shadowrun, D6 Rulebooks, Traveler, Immortal and a number of GURPS books. I have also been converted into an Inde Press lover and purchased Burning Wheel, Nine Worlds, Mortal Coil, Agon, Polaris, Conspiracy of Shadows, Spirit of the Century, Don't Rest Your Head, Primetime Adventures and Dust Devils. 18 different games. 18! By the way, those are the games I remember.

What is a guy to do? I feel like I am going to EXPLODE (yes I used all caps) with game need. I have ideas for stories galor. Where do I start? What do I do? No one can run all of this. I jump from game to game faster than a news channel after a pop star. I have them, I have to use them.

Lastly, I hope the players are still there. We had a lot of fun in the past right? I believe there are more wonders to behold. When I get home, let's take a journey together.

Ok. I feel a little better.

* Well I am concerned about other aspects of graduating college. I just am not going to discuss them in "Gamer Therapy". :)

Dreams

So I had two dreams last night. Like I said, this stuff will not be interesting to more that 99.9% of the population. Anyway...

The first dream had Willie Aames in it (if you don't know who he is google him). Your guess is as good as mine. Thankfully I don't remember much of that one.

The second was a little odd. I was sitting in my childhood church with current friends. I was actually feeling good being there I think. Then the priest started lecturing about those who are so bad they couldn't be at the church and they had to leave. I remember looking around to see who they were. Then a group of people in the row behind me got up and started to leave the church in a line. They were all wearing hot red high school letter jackets. On the back of the jackets were dirty titles (like scarlet letter style). They all left and I was then sitting in a different area of the building. The priest comments that the people who left need to take their stuff with them. So all these people come back and the rows are full of assorted items the people are gathering. One comes up beside me and asks if I can give them the item next to me. I look down and there is an unopened Foghat album next to me. I pick it up and decide I want to keep it. Then my alarm goes off.

Like I said, your guess is as good as mine. I don't think I ever really heard a Foghat song before.

My Introduction

Well here is my blog. I created this thing because I am a roleplayer. Yes, the dreaded word. I will be using this to place notes for my games when I run them. So I guess this is mostly for my players.

Once in a while I may blog just to say or write something I am feeling. This will probably not happen very often however. More later.
